Group or Individual Personal Development Approach? Which Is For You?

Knowing the best way to go about achieving your personal development goals can be difficult. To get the best results, you must choose the approach that will work best for you as a person. Use the guide below to help decide the best approach for your personality.

First and foremost, stop and consider how much you enjoy being around people. Are you a member of a book club, PTO or any other group? Do you really enjoy being around groups of people? If you are not comfortable in a group setting, choosing the approach will be easy - individual, of course.

Do you need help with staying motivated to accomplish your goals? Some people can stay dedicated to a program or a plan without the push of others, while some need that extra push to stay on track. Having difficulty staying dedicated to things may be a sign that you need a group environment to help you accomplish your goals.

If you have tried groups in the past, assess whether or not the groups you have tried have worked well to stay focused on the goals that were set. Just because things you have tried in the past have not worked, that does not mean that it has been your fault. One group may work well for one person but not well for others.

When you join a group, be sure that you maintain perfect attendance and participate in any exercises. Just showing up does not mean that you will get everything out of the group that they offer. You must take part in all of the exercises if you wish to gain from all of the benefits of the group.

You do not have to commit solely to one approach or the other. You can gain a great deal of enlightenment from taking the group and individual approach combined. Continue to practice the things you have learned in group on days that the group does not meet.

Keep an open mind about the suggested methods of reaching your goals. What may seem silly or infective to you at first may be the thing you have been looking for all along. Sometimes the silliest exercises can make going through this process a bit more fun and can make all the difference in the world.

If the approaches you have tried over some time do not seem to be effective, do not put off the idea of changing your methods. Stay focused on what you are trying to accomplish and redevelop your plan to include the methods that have shown promise in improving your situation.

Utilizing the tips from above will help you stay on task toward reaching your goals of a better you. Whether you decide to go with a group, individual or combined approach, you will likely see some growth in yourself. As you are working through this, keep reminding yourself that this is a goal that you have set for yourself and the group is just a resource. Do not judge your personal accomplishments on those of the group.
