Personality plays a vital role in how others see you and in how you interact with the world. By consciously making attempts to improve and enhance your personality, you can become the person that you want to be. This article provides advice on how to change your personality, and your life, for the better.
The first step in this process is to objectively examine yourself and your life. What parts of your personality do you feel are essential to who you are and what you do? What aspects of your personality do you feel are hindering you or holding you back? The only way that you are going to be able to decide what you need to change is through honesty. Do not sugarcoat things with yourself; avoid words like "always" and "never" when thinking through your personality, because things are rarely ever black and white.
Consider the qualities that you think would benefit your life. Create a list, but keep it reasonable. Focusing on two or three qualities is quite a bit easier than trying to tackle ten different things. For example, maybe you would like to be more responsible and friendly; those are two great qualities to focus on. Make sure that you are thinking only of yourself when doing this exercise; do not consider what other people want for you or how they think you should be. You need to be invested in the process, and that is never going to happen if you let others dictate what you are doing.
Each day, do at least one thing to reinforce each of the qualities that you want to achieve. If you are working on becoming responsible, for example, actively think through your upcoming day and identify areas where you can exhibit this trait. The more you do it, the more it will become second nature to you. Note, however, that at first the process will be hard, and it is important to realize that you may not be as successful as you would like right away. Do not get discouraged; keep trying until your small successes build into large ones.
Finally, keep a journal. Before you go to sleep each night, note the ways that you were able to incorporate each of your desired qualities into your day. While you were hopefully able to follow through with some of your intended actions, you probably also exhibited the traits at different times without even realizing it. Make note of everything in your journal. Not only is it a good way to track how well you are doing, it can be helpful if you ever start to doubt yourself or feel down. Simply pick up your journal and look through it to see how well you are doing.
While personality is often thought to be something that you are born with, it can be shaped by your own life choices. Use the information in this article to help you become someone that you are proud of. Remain optimistic and goal-oriented, and you will see results before you know it.
